At the Indian Origin, Scientists have included those which have developed a new battery-less cell phone as for the first-time that it can consume almost the zero power and that can run by harvesting from the ambient radio signals or the lights.
Skype calls is by using the team as its battery-free Mobile phone, demonstrating that the prototype made of the commercial, off the shelf components that can receive and transmit speech and that to communicate with a base station.
Associate of the professor at the Washington (UW) University in the US has said that “we have built what we believe as in the first functioning of the cell phone that can consume almost zero power.”
A signal that can convey sound into the digital data and that a phone can understand is by the researchers that can eliminate a power-hungry step that is in the most modern cellular transmissions- converting analog. It is said by the researchers that the process can consume so much of the energy that it has been impossible to design a phone that can rely on the ambient power sources.
Instead of the battery- free cell phones it takes all the advantages of the tiny vibrations in a phone’s microphone or the speakers that can occur as when a person is talking into a phone or listening to a cell.
As in the reflected signals as to transmit the speech, the phone uses the vibrations from the device’s microphone as to encode speech patterns in the reflected signals. As for receiving the speech, it also converts encoded radio signals into sound vibrations that are picked up as by the phone’s speaker. Devices like the prototype the user presses a button to switch between these two ‘transmitting’ and ‘listening’ modes, as said by the researchers. This prototype works as to able to perform the basic phone functions- transmitting speech of the data and receiving user as the input via the buttons.
Researchers were able to receive the incoming calls by using Skype, dial out and place callers on hold with the battery-free phone.
To transmit and to receive the radio signals the team designed a custom base station. The technology can now conceivably be integrated as into the standard cellular network of infrastructure or Wi-Fi routers as now it is commonly used to make the calls.
In this research said by Vamsi Talla associate at UW as “you could imagine in the future that all the cell towers or the Wi-Fi routes could also come with our base station technology that is embedded in it and so if the every house has a Wi-Fi router in it, you could get the battery-free cell phone coverage everywhere.
To perform some of the operations the battery-free phone does still require a small amount of the energy. The prototype has a power budget of 3.5 microwatts.
From the different sources the two sources, of the energy researchers demonstrated as for how to demonstrate how to harvest. Prototype from the battery-free phone prototype can operate on power gathered from the ambient radio signals that are transmitted by a base station which is up to 31 feet away.
It is using the power harvested from the ambient light with a tiny solar cell which is roughly the size of grain rice and the device was able to communicate with a base station that was 50 feet away as said by the researchers.
It is the study that was published in the journal Proceedings of the Association for the Computing Machinery on the Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.
